CP Nnanna Oji Ama has assumed office as the new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, with a pledge to consolidate existing security gains and strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders across the state.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, on Monday, the command said Oji Ama formally assumed duty on August 10, 2026.
He succeeds the immediate past Commissioner of Police, AIG Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police before his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
The new Commissioner of Police is a senior police officer with more than three decades of experience in the Nigeria Police Force, with a career spanning intelligence, criminal investigation, tactical operations, administration, public relations and strategic command.
Before his deployment to Anambra, Oji Ama served as Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Training, at the Force Intelligence Department, Force Headquarters, Abuja. He had previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in the same department.
A native of Ekata in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Oji Ama holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Jos.
He began his police career as a Cadet Superintendent of Police and trained at the Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
His previous appointments include Deputy Commissioner of Police, General Investigation, Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja; Commanding Officer, 44 Police Mobile Force, Force Headquarters, Abuja; Area Commander, Nnewi, Anambra State; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Homicide, FCID; and Zonal CID, Zone 9, Umuahia.
He also served as Commanding Officer, 11 PMF, Calabar; Divisional Police Officer, Asokoro and Dutse Alhaji in the Federal Capital Territory; Coordinator of Courses, Police Detective College, Enugu; Commanding Officer, 26 PMF, Uyo; Divisional Crime Officer, Sango-Otta, Ogun State; and Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers State Police Command, among other strategic positions.
Oji Ama has undergone several professional and strategic training programmes in Nigeria and abroad, including the Policy, Strategy and Leadership Course at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru; Joint Operational Planning Course conducted with the British Military Advisory and Training Team; and the Incident Site Commander’s Course by the British High Commission College of Policing.
Other courses include Tactical, Operational and Strategic Intelligence Command and Management; Advanced Detective Course; and various Squadron Commanders and Combat Operations Courses.
The new Commissioner has also received recognition for professional courage and operational effectiveness, including a commendation award for uncommon bravery, courage and gallantry following the recovery of a rifle during a confrontation with armed robbers in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, in 2007.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Psychological Association and Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
On assumption of office, Oji Ama pledged to consolidate the security gains recorded in Anambra and strengthen collaboration between the police and other security agencies, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, women and other critical stakeholders.
The Commissioner assured residents that the command would remain committed to protecting lives and property, preventing and combating crime, upholding the rule of law and providing a safe and secure environment for residents, visitors and businesses across the state.
