President Bola Tinubu has described Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in the Osun State governorship election as an assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria.
The President stated this in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, following Adeleke’s victory in the August 15 election.
Tinubu confirmed that he personally called Adeleke earlier in the day to extend his congratulations.
He emphasized that the election result confirmed the confidence and trust the people of Osun State have in the governor.
Wishing him success in his upcoming second term, Tinubu urged Adeleke to unite the residents of Osun State and rally them for social, economic, and political progress, regardless of partisan differences.
The President also commended the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants, noting that their participation enriched the nation’s democratic culture.
He lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for conducting a peaceful, transparent, and credible election.
Adeleke, standing as the Accord Party candidate, was declared the winner at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday by the State Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.
He polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 444,815 votes.
The Accord Party candidate secured victory in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while the APC candidate won 11 local government areas.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
The electoral victory secures a second term for Adeleke, who was first elected governor in 2022 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the Accord Party ahead of the 2026 poll.
Earlier on Sunday, Adeleke expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the congratulatory call and reaffirmed his endorsement of the President for the 2027 presidential election.
