Mr Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has visited the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja to condole with its leadership over the death of the congress’ General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.
Obi, who visited the NLC headquarters, expressed his condolences to the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and other members of the labour leadership over Ugboaja’s death.
“The news of Comrade Emmanuel’s passing came to me as a rude shock. He was a good friend, a gentleman, and a principled advocate for the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerian workers,” Obi said.

He described Ugboaja’s commitment to the labour movement and his unwavering belief in the cause of workers as qualities that made him a remarkable man.
“He lived a life of service, and his contributions to the labour movement will remain part of his enduring legacy,” Obi said.
Obi said he was consoled by the knowledge that Ugboaja lived an exemplary life and dedicated himself to a cause greater than himself.
“I am consoled by the knowledge that Comrade Emmanuel lived an exemplary life and dedicated himself to a cause greater than himself. His legacy of service, courage, and commitment will continue to inspire the younger generation,” he said.
Ugboaja, a lawyer and veteran trade unionist, served as General Secretary of the NLC from 2019 until his death at 60.
The NLC described him as a lawyer, strategist and strong negotiator who made significant contributions to the advancement of workers’ interests and the labour movement.
Obi said his thoughts and prayers were with Ugboaja’s family, colleagues, friends, the NLC and all those who knew him.
“At this difficult moment, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, colleagues, friends, the entire NLC family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.
“May God Almighty grant his family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss, and may He grant Comrade Emmanuel eternal rest,” Obi added.
