Kwankwaso Condemns Blockade of Obi’s Convoy, Urges International Community to Take Note

Former Kano State Governor and Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned the reported attack and blockade of the convoy of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Benue State.

Kwankwaso made his position known in a statement posted on his official social media handle on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following reports that Obi’s convoy was stopped by youths while travelling to Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Obi was reportedly on his way to visit communities affected by recent attacks.

The former governor described the incident as “another dark day for our democracy”, alleging that unruly elements were deliberately mobilised to block and attack Obi’s convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi.

He said the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement, adding that the right applies to Obi as a former governor and leading opposition figure.

Kwankwaso called on the Benue State Government to urgently identify and prosecute those responsible, while ensuring the safety and free movement of Obi and his entourage.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors, particularly those in the ruling party, against actions that could undermine the sanctity of democracy.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate further appealed to the international community, including diplomatic missions and election observation groups, to take note of the incident.

He urged them to call on Nigerian authorities to uphold the rule of law, protect opposition leaders and safeguard democratic freedoms.
