The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that hoodlums invaded its monthly Ward meeting at Ihuani Awkunanaw in Obuofia, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, on Saturday and opened fire on party members, leaving eight persons with gunshot injuries.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued by Hon. Sampson Ukwu, Media Aid to Sir Christian Chinyeaka Ohaa, the NDC governorship candidate in Enugu State, on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
According to the statement, NDC members had gathered at the venue for the state-wide monthly Ward meeting when the alleged attackers invaded the gathering and opened fire on the party faithful.
The statement identified those it said were injured as Onovo Donald Ekene, Ngene Godwin Madueke, Ogbodo Gloria, Onovo Victor, Maduabuchi Ugwu, Nnaemeka Nelson, Chinonso Nwagbara and Obinna Daniel Owo.
It also alleged that canopies, chairs and party materials were vandalised and destroyed during the incident.
The NDC described the alleged attack as “a clear act of political thuggery” and an attempt to intimidate opposition members through violence.
The party further alleged that the incident followed similar attacks earlier witnessed in Akpugo and Obe wards in Nkanu West, where peaceful political gatherings were allegedly disrupted with gunfire and destruction of property.
“We strongly condemn this barbaric act,” the NDC said in the statement.
The party cited Sections 33(1) and 40 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which guarantee the right to life and the right of citizens to freely assemble and associate, including belonging to political parties.
The NDC said no political party or group of hoodlums had the right to turn the streets of Enugu into a battlefield or attack citizens for exercising their constitutional rights.
It called on the Enugu State Police Command, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the alleged attack, identify the perpetrators, arrest and prosecute them.
The party said those who resorted to shooting innocent people simply because they belonged to a different political organisation must be brought to justice, stressing that “the lives of our members matter.”
Ohaa, while calling on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the alleged perpetrators, warned that the attack would not intimidate the NDC.
“The entire NDC family in Enugu State remain undeterred. We will not be intimidated. We will not abandon our people. We will continue our peaceful and issue-based campaign until the will of Ndi Enugu prevails in 2027,” Ohaa said.
He added: “Enough of this madness.”
