Holy Ghost Keke Dispute Was Over Road Obstruction, Not Tax — Ministry

ENUGU — The Enugu State Ministry of Transport has dismissed as fake news reports that the temporary disruption at the Holy Ghost Terminal on Tuesday was caused by a dispute over tax.

The Ministry, in a clarification by the Commander of the MOT, Mr Kenneth Ugwu, said the incident followed a misunderstanding after Keke riders were directed to vacate unauthorised loading points along the road and move into the designated Keke park within the Bus Terminal.

Ugwu said the ensuing disagreement temporarily obstructed vehicular movement, causing tension among commuters and other road users.

He explained that the Keke Riders’ Association had since pledged full compliance, with its members moving into the designated Bus Terminal in line with the government’s directive to keep roads across the state free of obstruction.

The clarification came against the backdrop of reports of protests by commercial transporters and traders around the Holy Ghost, Ogbete and Old Park areas over alleged multiple levies, taxation and rising fuel costs.

The protesters had alleged that the revenue demands were putting additional pressure on their businesses.

The Ministry, however, maintained that the specific disruption at the Holy Ghost Terminal was caused by the enforcement of designated loading points and not a tax dispute.
