Enugu Govt Restricts Movement Sept. 26 for LG Elections

The Enugu State Government has announced a restriction of vehicular movement and other forms of transportation across the state from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, to facilitate the conduct of the state’s Local Government Council elections.

The government announced the restriction in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, on Thursday in Enugu.

According to Onyia, the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) will conduct elections into the 17 Local Government Council chairmanship and 260 councillorship positions across the state on Saturday.

He said the restriction was aimed at ensuring the peaceful, orderly, secure and hitch-free conduct of the elections.

“Accordingly, there shall be no vehicular movement on the roads or other forms of transportation within the state during the period of the restriction, except persons and vehicles performing essential election-related and emergency services,” he said.

Onyia said those exempted from the restriction included ENSIEC officials and accredited election personnel, security personnel duly deployed for election duties and accredited election observers.

He added that authorised media practitioners, health workers, ambulances, firefighters and other persons expressly authorised to perform essential election or emergency duties were also exempted.

The SSG urged residents of the state, political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders to comply fully with the directive and conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly before, during and after the elections.

He also encouraged the people of the state to exercise their civic responsibilities peacefully and in accordance with guidelines issued by ENSIEC and other relevant authorities.

Onyia said security agencies had been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the movement restriction and maintain law and order throughout the elections.

He expressed regret over the temporary inconvenience the restriction might cause, while appreciating the understanding and cooperation of residents as the state government worked with ENSIEC and other relevant authorities to ensure peaceful, orderly, secure and successful local government elections.
