Awka — Rangers International FC of Enugu began their stint at Awka City Stadium as their temporary home venue for NPFL matches with a convincing 3-1 victory over Abia Warriors of Umuahia in a Match Day Seven Oriental Derby.
Rangers took the lead in the 37th minute through prolific striker Godwin Obaje, who finished clinically after the Flying Antelopes impressed with quick passing and attacking play. The hosts went into the break 1-0 ahead.
Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo doubled Rangers’ advantage in the 49th minute, pouncing on a rebound from the Abia Warriors goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Abia Warriors reduced the deficit in the 53rd minute after Rangers defender Austin Okpara handled the ball inside the penalty area. Obioma Chukwuemeka converted the resulting spot-kick, sending Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh the wrong way.
Abia Warriors were reduced to 10 men in the 77th minute after Jibrin Faiz was sent off. Rangers capitalised on the numerical advantage in stoppage time, with Daniel Akolade scoring in the 90+1st minute to seal the 3-1 victory.
Abia Warriors coach Imama Amapakabo said his side created more chances but failed to convert them, attributing the defeat largely to technical issues rather than tactics.
Amapakabo, however, said the team remained positive, stressing that there was still a long way to go in the league.
The match attracted a capacity crowd at Awka City Stadium, with supporters turning out in large numbers to witness the Oriental Derby and welcome Rangers to their temporary home.
Rangers will continue their Awka campaign against Bendel Insurance in their next NPFL fixture.
