Enugu Police Arrest Five Over Alleged Vandalism Of Public Assets

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five suspects in three separate operations over the alleged vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including a solar streetlight, road traffic signs and materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Enugu.

Ndukwe said two suspects, Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were arrested at about 8:30 p.m. on September 27, 2026, at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu, following information that they were negotiating the sale of a suspected stolen solar streetlight.

According to him, police operatives from New Haven Division recovered the solar streetlight from the suspects, who allegedly confessed during interrogation to vandalising and stealing it earlier that day at Graceland Estate, Independence Layout, Enugu.

Ndukwe added that another suspect, 35-year-old Chukwudi Nwigbo, was arrested at about 3:34 a.m. on September 24 along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu, after security surveillance detected him and an accomplice allegedly removing road traffic signs.

The police spokesman said several vandalised road signs bearing different inscriptions were recovered from Nwigbo, while his accomplice escaped.

He added that on September 15, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, working with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested Zubairu Hamanpedimso, 31, and Mohamed Adamu, 21, over the alleged vandalism and theft of Enugu State Water Corporation materials, with iron materials, bolts and nuts recovered from them.

Ndukwe said all five suspects had been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody pending further hearing, while efforts were ongoing to arrest other accomplices still at large.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu, CP Mamman Giwa has commended the operatives and Neighbourhood Watch members for their prompt response and recovery of the public assets, urging residents to provide timely and credible information on activities capable of undermining public infrastructure and security.
