Ghana Seeks Global Support for Green Agenda

Ghana is seeking to translate fresh diplomatic engagements into practical international support for tackling plastic pollution, improving waste management, advancing cleaner transport and strengthening scientific research, following talks with five diplomatic and development partners.

The engagements, led by the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, involved representatives of Norway, the United Kingdom, Palestine, Russia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The discussions covered marine conservation, electric mobility, sustainable waste management, scientific innovation, technology transfer and institutional capacity-building, as Ghana seeks to align international cooperation with its environmental and technological development priorities.

With Norway, discussions centred on ocean development and marine sustainability, including efforts to tackle plastic pollution through the Ocean for Development Programme.

The cooperation is aimed at supporting sustainable ocean management and protecting marine ecosystems.

Engagements with the United Kingdom focused on electric mobility, interventions against illegal mining and improved waste management. These areas form part of broader efforts to address environmental degradation and promote more sustainable transport and waste-disposal practices.

The minister also explored opportunities for knowledge exchange and bilateral cooperation with Palestine. Discussions with Russia focused on strengthening research capabilities, facilitating technology transfer and advancing scientific innovation.

The engagement with the UNDP addressed institutional capacity, policy implementation and sustainable development initiatives, with emphasis on improving the ability of institutions to turn policy priorities into practical programmes.

The talks highlight Ghana’s effort to secure international cooperation across several areas of environmental management, research and technological development.
