The Enugu State Police Command has condoled with the family of Insp. Ikechukwu Obodo, who was killed in a hit-and-run road accident on Bisala Road, Enugu, on July 5, 2026.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, expressed his condolences during a visit to the deceased officer’s wife and family on Wednesday. The visit was led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Oliver Odimega.
Giwa described Obodo’s death as a tragic loss to the Nigeria Police Force, his family, friends and colleagues. He said the late inspector, who held a Doctor of Philosophy degree, died in circumstances that were painful and avoidable, and assured his family that the command would do everything within its powers to identify, arrest and prosecute the fleeing driver.
The commissioner prayed for the peaceful repose of the officer’s soul and for strength for his wife, children and other relatives to cope with the loss.
According to a preliminary report issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, Obodo was travelling to his duty post at about 7pm when the incident occurred.
Ndukwe said the commercial bus conveying the officer failed to stop at his designated bus stop near Pascan Jake Bus Stop on Bisala Road, forcing him to alight a few metres away. He said an altercation subsequently occurred between the officer and the bus driver.
“In the process, an unidentified speeding vehicle struck the officer and fled the scene, while the bus driver also drove away immediately.”
The police spokesperson said passers-by alerted operatives of the New Haven Police Division, who evacuated the injured officer to Parklane Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Ndukwe added that the deceased’s remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examination.
The command also dismissed reports suggesting that Obodo was struck by a government or security convoy vehicle, saying preliminary investigations had not established any such link.
Ndukwe assured the public that efforts to identify and arrest the fleeing driver remained ongoing, while the command reaffirmed its commitment to bringing those responsible for the officer’s death to justice.
