AWKA — Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has inspected the ongoing reconstruction and infrastructural upgrade of the Onitsha Main Market, assuring traders that the project is progressing steadily ahead of the 2026 Christmas shopping season.
Soludo, who toured the market to assess the pace and quality of work, interacted with traders and sought their assessment of the ongoing reconstruction.
The traders, in a collective response, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the renovation, saying the work was advancing as expected.
The reconstruction is aimed at modernising the major commercial hub, improving sanitation and security, and restoring order and functionality to the market, one of the major trading centres in West Africa.
However, the governor warned that the completion of the project would come with stricter enforcement of regulations around the market.
Soludo said the state government would remove street traders and other unauthorised trading activities from the market corridors and surrounding areas once the reconstruction is completed.
He explained that the measure was necessary to ensure free movement of traffic, preserve the upgraded infrastructure and create a more orderly and globally competitive commercial environment.
