The Federal Government has commenced emergency remedial works to contain an erosion threat along the Obosi Bypass in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, disclosed this on Thursday after inspecting the affected corridor with officials of the Federal Ministry of Works.
Ezeobi said the inspection was aimed at assessing the extent of the erosion and monitoring the ongoing intervention to protect the bypass and other critical infrastructure in the area.
He described the Federal Government’s intervention as encouraging, stressing that prompt attention to threats affecting critical infrastructure was essential to protecting communities and road users.
“The swift response demonstrates the importance of government paying attention to the concerns of residents and acting promptly where critical infrastructure is threatened,” he said.
The commissioner said protecting strategic road corridors was necessary to sustain transportation, economic activities and the safety of road users, particularly along the Obosi axis, which connects Anambra with other parts of the South-East.
Recent assessments indicated that erosion had affected roads, drainage channels, buildings and other infrastructure in Obosi and adjoining communities, prompting calls from residents and stakeholders for urgent intervention.
At the Obosi Bypass, construction activities were ongoing during the inspection, with reports indicating the deployment of heavy equipment and engineering personnel for emergency remedial works aimed at stabilising the affected section and preventing further deterioration.
Ezeobi said the development also highlighted the need for sustained collaboration between the Federal and Anambra State governments in addressing erosion and other environmental challenges threatening roads and public infrastructure.
He expressed optimism that the ongoing intervention would be effectively executed and provide a lasting solution to the erosion threat.
