Sowore Vows Nigeria Won’t Miss World Cup

The African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has pledged to transform Nigeria into a major global sports hub and ensure the country qualifies for every FIFA World Cup if elected president.

Sowore made the pledge in Enugu while participating in the 2026 Enugu City International Marathon, where he competed in the 10-kilometre race for the second time.

He said he returned after being impressed by the organisation of the previous edition.

The AAC candidate described road races as important for healthy living, community development and youth engagement, urging states across the country to organise similar events.

He also noted that the 10-kilometre race was technically not a marathon, which covers 42 kilometres, while a half marathon is 21 kilometres.

Sowore said sports could become a major economic sector, create opportunities for young Nigerians and produce global ambassadors, describing the sports economy as an opportunity capable of generating substantial revenue beyond oil.

He cited Brazil’s football and Kenya’s long-distance running as examples of countries that have successfully harnessed sporting potential.

“Nigeria will become a major sports hub for the world. It doesn’t matter which sports you are doing. I’m a swimmer too, by the way,” he said, adding that Nigeria also had significant potential in swimming and athletics.

Sowore criticised the administration of sports in Nigeria, particularly football, arguing that the country had sufficient talent but had failed to provide the management, infrastructure and support required for athletes to excel. “We are supposed to be at the World Cup. If I’m president of Nigeria, we are not missing any World Cup for my eight years,” he said.

He added that his administration would prioritise competence in sports management and create an enabling environment for athletes and other sports professionals to succeed.
