AFCON 2027: Guinea-Bissau Humble Nigeria

Guinea-Bissau humbled three-time African champions Nigeria 3-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Tuesday at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute after capitalising on a defensive lapse to go into the break 1-0 ahead.

Nigeria pushed for an equaliser after the restart, but Guinea-Bissau exploited spaces behind the Super Eagles’ defence to score twice more and seal a convincing victory.

The result moved Guinea-Bissau to the top of Group L with six points, while Nigeria’s qualification hopes suffered another setback. In the other Group L match, Madagascar and Tanzania played out a 1-1 draw.

In another major result, Ghana suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Gambia in Accra in Group C. Both sides scored twice in an eventful first half before Gambia added two more goals after the interval.

Egypt recorded the biggest victory of the day, defeating South Sudan 5-0 in Juba, with Omar Marmoush scoring twice. Morocco also maintained a perfect start with a 2-0 away victory to move to six points at the top of Group A.

Senegal defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in Group J through an early goal by Ibrahim Mbaye, recording their first official victory under coach Patrick Vieira.

Algeria preserved their unbeaten record after recovering from an early setback to draw 2-2 with Burundi, while Mozambique scored four second-half goals to beat Sudan 4-1 at home.

Comoros also secured their first victory of the campaign with a 1-0 home win over Namibia.
