NUJ Wants N150m Campaign Fee Cut

ENUGU — The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has urged the Enugu State Government to review the N150 million campaign advertising permit fee imposed on political parties and candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Council made the call in a communiqué issued after its monthly Congress at the NUJ Secretariat, Enugu, and jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, and Secretary, Sulaiman Onyeama Jr.,

The journalists said while regulation of outdoor advertising was necessary, the N150 million fee should not constitute a financial barrier capable of discouraging or limiting participation in the democratic process.

The Council also called on political office holders and other stakeholders to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants, irrespective of political affiliation.

It urged political parties and candidates to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns devoid of violence, hate speech and intimidation.

The Council further called on political parties and candidates to abide by the provisions of the peace accord and other relevant electoral guidelines throughout the electioneering period.

The journalists commended security agencies for the successful rescue of Catholic seminarian, Lawrence Igbo, and another victim, Emmanuel Onwudi, abducted during the Aug. 2 attack on St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inoyi-Affa, Udi Local Government Area.

The victims were among three persons abducted during the church attack, while security operatives later rescued one of them during the initial pursuit of the attackers.

The Council noted that a joint operation involving the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Enugu State Forest Guard and other security agencies led to the arrest of three suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate.

One of the suspects was killed during a gun duel with security operatives.

The operation also resulted in the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of ammunition, while the ransom reportedly paid in connection with the abduction was recovered.

The Council appreciated the sacrifices of security personnel in protecting lives and property and urged them to sustain efforts toward making the state safe for residents.

It also commended Nnoli Nnaji, National Assembly member representing Nkanu East/West Federal Constituency, for providing solar-powered lighting for the NUJ Enugu Press Centre.

The Council appealed to other political candidates, public-spirited individuals and organisations to emulate the gesture by supporting initiatives that promote the development and welfare of the union and its members.

It felicitated the people and Government of Enugu State on the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation, wishing the state continued peace, progress and development.

The Council reiterated its commitment to promoting peace, democracy and good governance through objective, balanced and responsible journalism.
