AWKA— The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, over the alleged murder of 23-year-old nursing student, Chiamaka Vivian Chilaka, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement issued in Awka and made available to newsmen on Saturday.
Ikenga said the suspect was arrested on Sept. 4 following credible and actionable information received by the Command.
He said Chilaka was murdered on June 14, 2026, in an incident that attracted widespread public outcry.
The deceased was an ND II student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, and was found dead at her off-campus residence. Earlier reports on the incident said a knife and signs of a struggle were found at the scene.
According to Ikenga, preliminary investigation showed that Ibekwe allegedly gained access to the building by scaling the fence with the aid of a ladder, with the initial intention of sexually assaulting the deceased.
He said the suspect allegedly told the police that a struggle subsequently ensued between him and Chilaka, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, resulting in her death.
“The suspect has also allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents within the community.
“These claims are currently being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration by the Command,” Ikenga stated.
The police spokesman said the latest development had exonerated the deceased’s landlord, Ogochukwu Ugoeze, who was earlier interrogated in connection with the murder.
“The Command further wishes to clarify that the landlord, who was earlier linked with the incident, has been exonerated, following the ongoing investigation.
“The Command, therefore, urges members of the public to disregard any earlier suspicion against him,” Ikenga stated.
Ugoeze had earlier been arrested by the police after Chilaka’s death, which generated significant public concern and scrutiny.
Ikenga said Ibekwe would remain in police custody as investigation continued, particularly into his alleged involvement in other related criminal activities.
He quoted the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nnanna Ama, as commending the people of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support throughout the investigation.
“The CP particularly appreciates members of the community, who provided timely and useful information that contributed to this significant breakthrough,” Ikenga quoted Ama as saying.
The Commissioner, according to Ikenga, assured the public that the Command would continue to pursue every credible lead in the investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable was made to face justice.
He said the Command remained committed to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in the police and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes did not escape justice.
