Enugu CP orders probe into alleged disruption of political gatherings

Enugu— The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Giwa, has ordered an investigation into two separate incidents of alleged disruption of political gatherings in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the state.

Giwa gave the order in a statement issued on Sunday in Enugu by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Daniel Ndukwe, who said the incidents occurred on Sept. 12.

Ndukwe said the first incident occurred at Ndiuno-Obuoffia community, where armed hoodlums allegedly disrupted an NDC ward meeting with sporadic shooting, injuring two attendees.

He said the second incident occurred at St. Joseph Primary School, Agbani, where hoodlums allegedly destroyed canopies and chairs prepared for a PDP rally.

According to him, Giwa directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to thoroughly investigate the two incidents and ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

Ndukwe said police operatives were promptly deployed to both scenes after receiving reports of the incidents to prevent further breaches and track down the fleeing suspects.

He, however, said neither of the two political gatherings had prior notification or a request for police security coverage.

The PPRO said Giwa reiterated the position he conveyed during his meeting with leaders of political parties in the state that all political activities must be conducted peacefully and in accordance with the law.

“Electoral offences remain punishable under the law,” Giwa warned, according to the statement.

He cautioned political parties, candidates, supporters and other stakeholders against violence, intimidation, destruction of property or any conduct capable of disrupting public peace and the electoral process.

The commissioner urged political parties and other stakeholders to promptly notify the police of their campaigns, meetings, rallies and other gatherings to facilitate appropriate security arrangements.

Giwa assured the public that the command would continue to maintain a peaceful and secure environment for lawful political activities and deal decisively with anyone who violated the law.
