The identity of a 35-year-old Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Adediji Sesan, who was crushed to death while on duty in Akure, Ondo State, has been revealed, with police confirming the arrest of the driver involved in the incident.

Sesan was reportedly on routine patrol with his team along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, Akure, when the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness account cited by Vanguard, the VIO officer attempted to stop a white Mitsubishi van with registration number AGL 992 XX for routine document inspection.

The driver, identified as 37-year-old Ayoade Idowu, reportedly stopped initially but allegedly drove off when asked to produce the relevant vehicle documents, hitting Sesan in the process.

The impact left the officer with severe head injuries. He was rushed to the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital, where a doctor on duty confirmed him dead.

His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said Idowu had been arrested and detained in connection with the officer’s death.

Abayomi said police operatives had visited the scene and commenced preliminary investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He added that the case file was expected to be transferred to the Motor Traffic Division for further investigation.

The police spokesperson expressed condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and associates, assuring them that the investigation would be thorough and that appropriate legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.

He urged motorists to exercise patience, obey lawful traffic instructions and cooperate with authorised traffic enforcement officers.

“No road user should endanger the life of another in an attempt to evade routine checks or traffic regulations,” Abayomi warned.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to road safety, the protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order across Ondo State.
