Rotimi Amaechi has thrown an unusual challenge into Nigeria’s 2027 political conversation: bring petrol down to ₦600 per litre, and he will switch sides.
The former Rivers governor, who is currently Atiku Abubakar’s running mate on the ADC ticket, said he would withdraw from the ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if petrol reaches that price.
Amaechi made the statement during a Friday appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where the conversation centred largely on the economy and the burden of rising living costs.
His argument was straightforward. If the administration can make petrol that affordable, he would be prepared to reconsider his political position.
He also questioned the claim that Nigerians have entered an era of prosperity, saying the test should be whether ordinary citizens can actually feel an improvement in their daily lives. On the election itself, Amaechi said he did not believe Tinubu would rig the 2027 poll, pointing instead to the anger and hardship among Nigerians.
The former governor stressed that his opposition to Tinubu should not be interpreted as personal hatred, even as he remains firmly positioned on the opposition side.
For now, Amaechi remains Atiku’s running mate. But with ₦600 petrol standing between him and a possible Tinubu campaign, his comments have added another unusual dimension to the road to 2027.
