APGA Wins All 21 Chairmanship Seats

AWKA — The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has won all the 21 chairmanship and 326 councillorship seats in the Anambra State Local Government elections held on Saturday.

The Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, announced the results on Sunday at the commission’s headquarters in Awka.

Osakwe declared the APGA candidates winners of all the chairmanship and councillorship positions after the conclusion of the electoral process across the state.

She said the election was conducted across the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 326 electoral wards of the state, describing the exercise as peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible and conducted in accordance with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.

According to her, APGA candidates emerged through a “Yes” or “No” voting process in 20 LGAs where they were unopposed.

She said the only contested chairmanship election was in Anambra East LGA, where APGA candidate, Hon. Ifeanyi Chinweze, polled 50,169 votes to defeat the Young Progressives Party (YPP) candidate, who scored 1,658 votes.

Osakwe expressed appreciation to the people of Anambra for their confidence in the commission throughout the electoral process.

She also commended the security agencies and the media for their support and cooperation before, during and after the election.

Reacting on behalf of the newly elected chairmen, the Chairman-elect of Ayamelum LGA, Hon. Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, ANSIEC, the security agencies and the media for providing a conducive environment for the conduct of the election.

Igwebuike pledged the commitment of the newly elected chairmen to supporting Soludo’s vision of making Anambra a livable and prosperous state.

The election was the first local government poll conducted in Anambra in several years and featured only APGA and YPP, with YPP fielding a chairmanship candidate only in Anambra East.
