The Managing Director, Enugu East Zone Bus Terminal, Dr John Egbo, has commended Gov. Peter Mbah for providing the environment for a peaceful local government election in Enugu State, saying the exercise reflects the state government’s commitment to grassroots democracy.
Egbo made the commendation shortly after casting his ballot at Polling Unit 10, Amechi East Ward 1, Enugu East Local Government Area, on Saturday.
He also commended the electorate for their peaceful conduct at the polling unit, noting that the orderly atmosphere demonstrated the willingness of residents to participate in the democratic process without violence or intimidation.
Egbo urged voters and other stakeholders across the state to sustain the peaceful atmosphere throughout the election, stressing the need for eligible voters to exercise their civic responsibilities responsibly and allow the electoral process to take its course.
He maintained that the peaceful conduct of the exercise was important to the credibility of the local government electoral process, particularly because the election provides residents with the opportunity to choose representatives at the grassroots level.
Egbo further maintained that the Enugu State Government had consistently conducted local government elections, describing the exercise as an important avenue for strengthening grassroots participation and ensuring that communities have elected representatives at the local government and ward levels.
He said the conduct of the election peacefully would help deepen confidence in the democratic process and encourage more residents to participate in future elections.
The Managing Director urged the electorate to remain calm, respect the rights of other voters and avoid actions capable of disrupting the voting process.
He equally called on political actors, party supporters, election officials and other stakeholders to place the interest of the state above partisan considerations and ensure that the election was concluded peacefully.
Egbo, who spoke after exercising his franchise, said residents should continue to demonstrate civic responsibility by voting peacefully and allowing the relevant electoral authorities to perform their duties without interference.
The Enugu local government election is being conducted across the state’s 17 local government areas and 260 wards. The state government and security agencies had also announced measures aimed at ensuring a peaceful and orderly exercise.
