ENUGU— The Enugu State Government says possession of the National Identification Number (NIN) is now mandatory for vulnerable residents seeking to enrol in the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) 2.0.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday.
Onyia said the requirement followed the commencement of BHCPF 2.0 in 2026, adding that the programme was designed to support access to basic healthcare and reduce the financial burden of healthcare on vulnerable persons.
He urged eligible residents across the state to participate in the ongoing NIN registration exercise, particularly those already registered under the Universal Health Coverage programme at Primary Healthcare Centres, whether or not they had previously accessed healthcare services.
According to him, the exercise targets pregnant women, children below five years, persons with disabilities, indigent residents, persons aged 85 years and above, pensioners and other eligible vulnerable members of the community.
He urged families, community leaders and other stakeholders to assist elderly persons, children, persons with disabilities and others who might require help with the registration process.
The SSG stressed that no eligible vulnerable person should be left behind or denied access to available healthcare support because of the absence of a NIN.
Onyia said the registration was being conducted statewide, with emphasis on rural communities, and would cover the 260 wards in the state.
He advised residents to visit their nearest Primary Healthcare Centre for information on the registration location in their respective wards.
