The Enugu State Police Command has secured the conviction of a 34-year-old man, Ejike Nnam, for conspiracy and robbery, with the court sentencing him to three and five years’ imprisonment, respectively, to run concurrently.
The Command also announced the arraignment and remand of a 29-year-old man, Richard Chukwuma, over the alleged theft of alcoholic beverages from a supermarket in Enugu.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Saturday.
Ndukwe said Nnam allegedly snatched an iPhone XR valued at ₦240,000 from a woman along Bisalla Road, Enugu, at about 8 p.m. on Oct. 8, with an accomplice who remains at large.
He said the suspect, who reportedly resided in an uncompleted building at Nkpokiti, Enugu, was arrested and arraigned the following day before the Enugu North Magistrate Court, where he pleaded guilty and was convicted.
According to the statement, the court sentenced Nnam to three years’ imprisonment for conspiracy and five years for robbery, with both sentences to run concurrently.
In the separate case, Ndukwe said Chukwuma was arrested at about 6:50 p.m. on Oct. 7 at a supermarket in Enugu, whose name was withheld, over the alleged theft of a bottle of Jameson Green Whisky valued at ₦30,150.
“During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to having earlier stolen 15 bottles of the same whisky from the supermarket,” the statement said.
Ndukwe added that Chukwuma was arraigned on Oct. 9 and subsequently remanded at the Enugu Correctional Centre.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mamman Giwa, has commended the Chief Magistrate for the prompt dispensation of justice in the phone-snatching case.
Giwa called for the sustained and expeditious conclusion of police cases before courts across the state, noting that timely adjudication strengthens public confidence in the justice system and supports effective crime prevention.
The commissioner also commended the New Haven Police Division and the prosecution team for their diligence, reaffirming the command’s commitment to thorough investigations and diligent prosecution in accordance with the law.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the police.
