The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, has directed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) to strengthen security around political gatherings and other electioneering activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Giwa gave the directive on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during a strategic conference with senior officers of the Enugu State Police Command at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the conference focused on key outcomes of the recently concluded Conference and Retreat of Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026), held in Owerri, Imo State.
The retreat, which had the theme, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections,” examined strategies for improving police preparedness and security management during elections.
Giwa expressed concern over recent political developments in Enugu State and charged Area Commanders and DPOs to ensure adequate security coverage for all political gatherings, whether formally notified to the Police or not, to prevent security breaches.
He directed the officers to engage political parties operating within their respective jurisdictions and obtain their campaign schedules to facilitate effective security planning and deployment.
The commissioner also urged police personnel to maintain neutrality and non-partisanship throughout the electioneering period, stressing the need to uphold the professional and ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to impartial policing and adequate security for all citizens, particularly during lawful political activities across Enugu State.
Giwa further directed officers in charge of tactical and operational departments, formations and units to strengthen crime-fighting strategies, sustain intelligence gathering and conduct professional raids on identified criminal hideouts within their areas of responsibility.
The conference was attended by Deputy and Assistant Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, DPOs, and heads of formations, units and sections of the Command.
