Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has attributed the elevation of Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to his professionalism and dedication to duty, particularly during the political crisis in the state.

Fubara stated this on Tuesday when the police chief paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.

The governor recalled that Disu served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State at the height of the political crisis but remained committed to his constitutional responsibilities.

“While he was here as Commissioner of Police, it was at the peak of a crisis, but I can tell you that he did his work not minding the situation. He tried as much as he could to balance all areas.

“So, I want to thank you for serving us well, and that service is what propelled you to this very exalted position that you occupy today,” Fubara said.

Describing the visit as a homecoming, the governor said Disu’s contributions to peace and security would remain part of the state’s history.

He also noted that the Inspector-General assumed office at a challenging period, particularly with the 2027 general elections approaching.

“You are taking this new office at a very difficult time too, considering the challenges we are already facing in this country and the one we are about to enter into, which is the election.

“I strongly believe that God will give you the grace to surmount that challenge,” he said.

Fubara assured Disu of the state government’s continued support in maintaining law and order.

Earlier, Disu said his visit was to appreciate the governor and Rivers residents for their cooperation during his tenure as Commissioner of Police.

He commended the people for sustaining peace and thanked Fubara for extending support to his successor and other security agencies.

The police chief stressed that effective policing depended on cooperation between the government, security agencies and the public, adding that other security agencies had also conveyed their appreciation for the governor’s support.

Disu explained that he was also in Port Harcourt to attend the book launch of Dame Stella Okuyiga, a 94-year-old retired Deputy Commissioner of Police and one of the first 20 women to join the Nigeria Police Force.

He described Okuyiga as a living monument whose contributions to policing deserved recognition.
