Enugu Police Arrest 6,240 Suspects, Recover 156 Firearms in 17 Months

ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command says it arrested 6,240 suspects, recovered 156 firearms and 1,486 rounds of assorted ammunition, and rescued 211 kidnapped and abducted victims in 17 months.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this on Friday while receiving the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 13, AIG Miller Gajere Dantawaye, who paid a working visit to the Command.

Giwa said the arrests, covering the period from his assumption of office on March 11, 2025, comprised 158 kidnapping suspects, 186 armed robbery suspects, 188 murder suspects, 57 suspects arrested for rape and defilement, 273 cultism suspects and 63 suspects for unlawful possession of firearms.

He said the remaining 5,315 suspects were arrested in connection with other offences, including stealing, breaking and vandalism.

The commissioner said the firearms recovered during the period included 43 AK-47 rifles and one G-3 assault rifle, while 209 vehicular exhibits, comprising motor vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles, were also recovered.

Giwa attributed the achievements to sustained intelligence-led operations, proactive policing and inter-State security collaboration.

He specifically highlighted the deployment of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), intensified border patrols under the Inspector-General of Police’s Handshake Patrol initiative, and enhanced emergency response through the Distress Response Squad and the Command-and-Control Centre.

The commissioner solicited continued support from the Police Zone, particularly in the areas of manpower, operational logistics and personnel welfare.

Addressing officers and men of the Enugu State Command at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu, Dantawaye charged them to uphold professionalism, discipline, accountability and ethical conduct.

The AIG urged the personnel to adhere strictly to Force regulations and respect the rights of citizens, while remaining committed to their constitutional responsibilities and sustaining public confidence in the Police.

Dantawaye expressed his readiness to work with personnel of the Command to further strengthen security in Enugu State.

The engagement was attended by officers and men of the Enugu State Command across all ranks and formations.
