The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two suspected thieves in separate operations in Nkanu West Local Government Area and New Haven, Enugu, recovering a stolen motorcycle, tricycle, Point-of-Sale (POS) machine and other items.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement signed on Thursday in Enugu on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa.
Ndukwe said that on Sept. 9, at about 5 p.m., operatives of Nkanu West Division, assisted by Forest Guards, arrested Nnamani Chekube Eze, 24, at Akpugo, in possession of an unregistered Sanya motorcycle.
He said the motorcycle was allegedly stolen from a male victim at Obuno-Akpugo, Nkanu West, adding that the suspect had made a confessional statement and was assisting the police with investigation.
The police spokesperson said that in another operation on Aug. 30, at about 7 p.m., operatives of New Haven Division arrested Godwin Emmanuel at an uncompleted building near WAEC Bus Stop, Independence Layout, Enugu.
According to him, Emmanuel was found with a tricycle reported stolen earlier that day from a church within the area and also confessed to stealing a Sumo pumping machine at Maryland, Enugu.
Ndukwe said the suspect and the recovered tricycle were handed over to Independence Layout Police Division, where he was subsequently arraigned and remanded in correctional custody by the court.
He further said that on Sept. 3, at about 6:10 a.m., residents alerted the police to suspected thieves moving from Ugbo-Okonkwo towards the Powerline area of New Haven.
The PPRO said operatives of New Haven Division immediately mobilised to the area, forcing the suspects to abandon two bags and flee.
He said the bags, recovered with the assistance of the Neighbourhood Watch, contained 112 new wrappers and 29 female handbags, which were subsequently identified and returned to their rightful owners.
Ndukwe added that a POS machine and a heavy-duty cable cutter were also recovered during the operation.
He said the motorcycle theft suspect would be arraigned upon completion of investigation, while efforts had been intensified to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The PPRO quoted Giwa as commending the police operatives, community members and security groups for their vigilance and cooperation.
Giwa directed that the fleeing suspects be identified, arrested, investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The commissioner also reassured residents of the command’s commitment to making Enugu State unconducive for unrepentant criminals.
