ENUGU — The Enugu State Police Command has launched a campaign against political and digital thuggery, urging youths to reject manipulation, violence, and criminal misuse of social media platforms.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Giwa, made the call on Saturday during a Police-Youth Dialogue held at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess, Agbani Road, Enugu, as part of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) International Youth Day 2026 celebration.
The event was organised under the NPF National Youth Leadership and Security Initiative with the themes, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations” and “My Future Is Greater Than Political Thuggery.”
Addressing issues surrounding youth roles during elections, police duties, electoral offences, and internal accountability, Giwa warned young people against allowing political actors to exploit them for civil disruption or digital harassment.
“Young Nigerians have a critical role to play in strengthening democracy and security,” Giwa said, calling on them to channel their energy and influence toward constructive civic participation, innovation, and leadership rather than political and digital thuggery.
Giwa described the campaign as a critical initiative of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, aimed at building trust and cooperation between law enforcement and young people.
“Choose peaceful participation, responsible citizenship, and positive leadership over violence and criminal manipulation,” the commissioner urged.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to professional, impartial, and accountable policing, Giwa called for sustained engagement and partnership between the police and young people.
Participating youth and student groups including the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Youth Congress, Nsukka Youth Assembly, Igbo Youth Movement, and National Association of Nigerian Students, pledged to work with the police and shun political and digital thuggery.
The event was attended by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Students Affairs, Hon. Prisca Okeke; Head, Department of Public Administration, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Ezeodili Walter Obi; representatives of the Police Officers’ Wives Association, Obra Foundation/Obra Legal, community leaders, and command officers.
